Three highly recommendation letters from my interpreter clients, May-August 2024

1. My sister Dona and I hired Gloria for what I am sure must have been a most unusual assignment: translating during the course of a memorial for Dona's son Stephan, who passed away in Taiwan among friends in 2022. Gloria undertook some research on common topics and conversations during typical memorials in American culture, so came prepared.During the event, she was presented with situations which required, for example, translating during a noon meal with more than a dozen people, all often speaking at once in different languages; translating a presenatation Dona gave to friends of Stephan's showing gifts she had made for them; translating at an intimate dinner with a local family hosting us to celebrate Stephan's life. She handled all these situations very well. During the sessions, she always made sure she understood what the speaker meant, asking questions of them if necessary until she was sure of their meaning. Then she repeated in the listeners language, making sure that they understood before frelaying their response. Her care in doing this prevented any misunderstandings between speakers. She showed sensitivity to the vulnerability of the conversations during what was sometimes an emotional time. If she wasn't sure what was being said she took care to find out...no easy task where English and Chinese are concerned, each having their distinctive grammar, phrasing, vocabulary, and cultural context to sort out and translate. Her English seemed fine at all times, whereby she could make her meaning understood, and was always able to elaborate where we were not sure what the speaker meant. We are glad she was with us to help communicate with our Taiwanese friends. We would definitely hire her again for anything we needed during future visits to Taiwan. And we enjoyed the wonderful country enough to truly consider coming back!
